About World Health Day

World Health Day is the World Health Organization’s annual global health observance on 7 April. Each year WHO uses the day to draw attention to a health topic of international concern.

The date also marks the anniversary of the WHO Constitution coming into force in 1948. The observance therefore combines WHO’s institutional anniversary with changing public-health campaigns.

Why World Health Day matters

World Health Day creates a shared moment for public-health communication, but its value depends on accuracy. Health campaigns should distinguish population-level information from individualized diagnosis or treatment.

The WHO Constitution places health in a rights-based and international-cooperation framework, making the day relevant to access, prevention, health systems, equity and evidence—not only to personal lifestyle choices.

History of World Health Day

The WHO Constitution came into force on 7 April 1948. WHO identifies that date as the anniversary of its founding.

The First World Health Assembly called for a World Health Day in 1948, and the observance has been celebrated annually on 7 April since 1950 with changing themes focused on priority health issues.
