Proclaimed at UNESCO’s 41st General Conference (2021)
About World Novel Week
World Novel Week begins on 13 October each year. UNESCO created the Week to promote novels and reading, highlight the status and rights of writers and other participants in the book ecosystem, and encourage cultural exchange through literature.
The observance can be used to explore novels not only as entertainment but also as cultural expression: works shaped by language, publishing conditions, translation, artistic freedom, access to books and the communities in which they circulate.
Why World Novel Week matters
Novels can carry memory, imagination, social criticism and perspectives across languages and borders. Supporting the form therefore involves readers and writers as well as translators, editors, publishers, libraries, booksellers and educational institutions.
World Novel Week also creates space to discuss the working conditions and freedoms of writers, access to diverse literature, translation and the policies that affect how books are produced, discovered and preserved.
