About World Coding Day

World Coding Day is observed on 29 October. UNESCO Member States established the Day to recognize the growing importance of coding skills for education, innovation and participation in a digital society.

The observance is most useful when it treats coding as more than learning syntax. Access to computing education, teacher preparation, infrastructure, critical thinking, accessibility, ethics and unequal participation all shape who can become a creator rather than only a consumer of digital technology.

Why World Coding Day matters

Coding can support problem-solving and computational thinking, but opportunities to learn it are uneven. Income, geography, disability, gender, language, infrastructure and teacher capacity can all affect access.

World Coding Day therefore provides a useful frame for discussing both technical learning and the conditions required for inclusive digital education, including responsible use of AI and other rapidly changing technologies.

History of World Coding Day

At UNESCO’s 217th Executive Board session, the United Arab Emirates put forward the closely related proposals for an International Day for Digital Learning and World Coding Day.

On 20 November 2023, UNESCO’s General Conference adopted 42 C/Resolution 15 and proclaimed 29 October of every year World Coding Day.

UNESCO states that World Coding Day was celebrated for the first time in 2024.

How to Observe World Coding Day

01

Try a small coding project that solves a real problem or explains a concept, documenting what you learned rather than focusing only on the finished result.

02

Support accessible coding clubs, teacher training or open educational resources that lower barriers for learners who have fewer opportunities.

03

Discuss how AI-assisted coding changes the skills learners need, including verification, debugging, security and understanding what generated code actually does.

04

Review participation gaps in computing education and identify one practical change that could improve access in a school, library or community program.
