About Top Gun Day
Top Gun Day is an unofficial fan observance held on May 13 for people who enjoy the Top Gun films and their pop-culture legacy. The day is fan-created rather than a government holiday or an official civic commemoration.
The dedicated Top Gun Day site explains that organizers originally wanted the observance to match the first film’s May 16, 1986 release anniversary, but early graphics were mistakenly made for May 13 and the date spread before the error was caught.
Why Top Gun Day matters
The observance is mainly a lighthearted fandom event. Typical participation centers on revisiting the films, discussing favorite scenes or characters, and sharing aviation- or movie-themed activities with other fans.
It does not confer any official status on the films, the military, or their creators. References to the franchise should respect copyright and avoid reproducing protected dialogue, scripts, images, or other material without permission.
History of Top Gun Day
TopGunDay.com was already publishing organizing material in February 2009 and continues to present itself as the dedicated home of the observance. The reviewed material supports an organized fan campaign by that time but does not establish an exact first observed edition.
The site’s own history of the May 13 date says the campaign intended to use May 16, the original film’s release anniversary, but mistakenly printed May 13 on promotional graphics. Because the incorrect date had already circulated, May 13 became the observance date.
