About Hari Pramuka

Hari Pramuka, or Pramuka Day, is observed in Indonesia every 14 August to commemorate the national Scout movement, Gerakan Pramuka.

Kwartir Nasional history links the date to 14 August 1961, when Gerakan Pramuka was officially introduced to the public and President Soekarno presented the national scouting banner to the movement.

Why Hari Pramuka matters

Hari Pramuka highlights youth development through scouting, including character, leadership, skills, service, teamwork and responsibility to community and country.

The day also carries institutional meaning: it recalls the consolidation of Indonesian scouting organizations into Gerakan Pramuka and the movement’s public launch as a national youth-education organization.

History of Hari Pramuka

On 20 May 1961, Presidential Decision No. 238 of 1961 established Gerakan Pramuka as the continuation and renewal of Indonesia’s national scouting education movement.

On 14 August 1961, Gerakan Pramuka was officially introduced to the public at the State Palace. President Soekarno presented the movement’s banner to its first national chairman, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX.

Presidential Decision No. 448 of 1961, dated 14 August 1961, awarded the national scouting banner. Kwartir Nasional rules state that 14 August is Hari Pramuka because the government awarded that banner on 14 August 1961.
