About National IPA Day

National IPA Day, also called International IPA Day, is an informal craft-beer community observance held on the first Thursday in August. In 2026 it fell on August 6.

The campaign centres the India pale ale style and the community around craft brewing. It is not a statutory holiday and does not require buying or consuming alcohol.

Why National IPA Day matters

The observance grew as a social-media invitation for adult beer enthusiasts, writers and brewers to exchange knowledge about beer styles and production.

Alcohol carries health and safety risks. Participation is strictly optional, restricted to people of legal drinking age, and may be limited or prohibited by local law; non-alcoholic participation is equally valid.

History of National IPA Day

In July 2011, Ashley V. Routson wrote contemporary launch material crediting herself and Ryan A. Ross with founding International IPA Day. The inaugural event was held Thursday, August 4, 2011.

Routson’s 2016 CraftBeer.com article describes the first-Thursday-in-August recurrence. The modern observance is a grass-roots movement, not the founding date of the historical beer style itself.
