About International Day of Zero Waste

International Day of Zero Waste is observed on 30 March. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the annual day through resolution A/RES/77/161 in December 2022, and the first observance took place in 2023.

The observance focuses on preventing and minimizing waste, improving environmentally sound waste management and supporting more sustainable production and consumption. It is jointly facilitated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and UN-Habitat.

Why International Day of Zero Waste matters

Zero waste is best understood as a direction for reducing unnecessary material use, keeping products and materials in use for longer, improving reuse and recovery, and preventing pollution across product life cycles. It should not be reduced to recycling alone.

The international day connects household choices with wider systems such as product design, procurement, repair, reuse, collection, urban services, business models and public policy. Responsible activities should therefore avoid shifting the entire burden of waste prevention onto individual consumers.

History of International Day of Zero Waste

Türkiye introduced the zero-waste initiative in the UN General Assembly Second Committee in 2022, with broad support from other Member States.

On 14 December 2022, the General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/77/161 on promoting zero-waste initiatives to advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The resolution designated 30 March as the International Day of Zero Waste.

UNEP and UN-Habitat jointly facilitated the inaugural International Day of Zero Waste on 30 March 2023 and continue to support the annual observance.

How to Observe International Day of Zero Waste

01

Audit one recurring waste stream in a home, school, workplace or event and identify where prevention, reuse or repair can happen before disposal.

02

Map the life cycle of a commonly used product—from materials and design through use, repair, reuse and disposal—to identify where waste can be prevented rather than merely managed later.

03

Support a local repair, refill, reuse, food-sharing or materials-recovery initiative and document what infrastructure or policy would make it easier to scale.

04

Review procurement or event-planning practices for avoidable single-use items and set a measurable reduction goal without making unsupported claims such as “zero impact.”
