About International Albinism Awareness Day

International Albinism Awareness Day is observed on 13 June. The United Nations established the day to increase understanding of albinism and to strengthen protection of the human rights, dignity and safety of persons with albinism.

The observance is especially connected to combating stigma, discrimination and violence. It should be approached as a human-rights day, not as a spectacle focused on physical difference.

Why International Albinism Awareness Day matters

Persons with albinism can face discrimination in education, employment, health care and public life, and in some contexts have been subjected to severe violence and harmful myths. Awareness is useful only when it helps replace misinformation with accurate information and rights-based action.

Respectful observance centers the voices and agency of persons with albinism, avoids sensational imagery, and recognizes that experiences differ across countries and communities.

History of International Albinism Awareness Day

The Human Rights Council adopted resolution 26/10 on 26 June 2014 and recommended that the General Assembly proclaim 13 June as International Albinism Awareness Day. The Council record states that Somalia introduced the draft sponsored by Ethiopia on behalf of the Group of African States, with additional co-sponsors.

On 18 December 2014, the General Assembly adopted A/RES/69/170 and proclaimed 13 June as International Albinism Awareness Day with effect from 2015.

The General Assembly resolution also welcomed the fact that civil-society actors were already observing 13 June. United Nations Human Rights material documented the first International Albinism Awareness Day in 2015, so the engine preserves both the pre-UN civil-society precursor and the formal UN lifecycle.
