About Republic Day

Ghana’s Republic Day falls on July 1 and commemorates the country’s transition to republican status on July 1, 1960.

Its legal holiday status has changed in recent years: it was treated as a commemorative day rather than a public holiday after the 2019 changes, and Parliament’s 2025 amendment restored July 1 as a statutory public holiday.

Why Republic Day matters

Republic Day marks Ghana’s constitutional transition from the post-independence dominion framework to a republic with a Ghanaian president as head of state.

In 2025 the Presidency also designated Republic Day as the annual National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving. That is a later current initiative layered onto the civic date; participation and interpretation should remain respectful of different faiths and non-religious viewpoints.

History of Republic Day

Ghana gained independence in 1957 and became a republic on July 1, 1960. Current Ghana government material describes July 1, 1960 as the transition to republican status.

A 2021 Ministry of the Interior calendar, reflecting the post-2019 framework, listed Republic Day on July 1 as a commemorative day and expressly stated that commemorative days were not public holidays.

The Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Act, 2025 restored July 1 to the statutory public-holiday schedule.

In April 2025, the Presidency separately declared Republic Day, July 1 each year, as Ghana’s National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving. This later initiative does not replace the civic Republic Day history.

Because Ghanaian law permits substituted observance dates in specified circumstances, people planning work, banking or travel should consult the current official notice for a particular year.
