About International Darwin Day

International Darwin Day is observed on February 12, Charles Darwin’s birthday, as a science and education observance.

The modern organized movement developed through annual events in the 1990s and later nonprofit coordination; it is distinct from Darwin’s 1809 birth itself.

Why International Darwin Day matters

Darwin Day uses Darwin’s birthday as a focal point for science education, scientific inquiry and discussion of evolutionary biology.

The date rationale and the origin of the modern recurring observance are separate: February 12 comes from Darwin’s birthday, while the organized movement took shape much later.

History of International Darwin Day

Dr. Robert Stephens motivated the Humanist Community in Silicon Valley to begin an annual Darwin Day Celebration in 1995.

Professor Massimo Pigliucci organized annual Darwin Day events at the University of Tennessee beginning in 1997, and Amanda Chesworth joined Stephens in incorporating the Darwin Day Program in 2000.

The program was reincorporated in California in 2002; in 2009 it partnered with the American Humanist Association around Darwin’s bicentennial.

In 2022, responsibility for maintaining the Darwin Day website transferred to the National Center for Science Education.
